The 2008 John Roger Scholastic Scholarship Award Winners Are Announced !

The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association has provided academic scholarships to children of Norfolk Police Officers since 2003. We are pleased to announce that over
$10, 000.00 has been awarded through June of this year. The Board of Directors named this annual scholarship the “John Roger Scholastic Scholarship” in honor of deceased Past President John Roger, who worked diligently to initiate the scholarship program. These awards are based on the student’s grades and an essay on “Why I should be awarded this grant and my aspirations for the future”. The awards are provided for any educational institution above the high school level. The scholarships are open to students graduating from high school or currently attending an institution of higher learning. Past recipients of this scholarship are also welcome to re-apply.

In 2008, three scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000.00 were awarded at our June meeting. Winners of this year’s scholarships are Christine Hubbard, daughter of Officer Beverly Hubbard, Jordan Balance, daughter of Detective Gene Balance, and Brooke Hughes, daughter of Officer Jo Ann Hughes. Congratulations to all!!

The recipients were selected by the Virginia Tidewater Consortium, a non-profit organization for higher education. Dr. Lawrence Dotolo, President of the consortium, and Nicola V. Beltz, Program Manager are on the selection board.
