What is it about?
The Citizen Police Academy in Norfolk, Virginia provides the opportunity to
learn the practices and procedures of law enforcement in a non-threatening
setting. Citizens have the chance to interact with other citizens like
themselves who are involved in their community, and to gain partners within law
enforcement agencies. This is a 12 week course which offers a wide range of
topics, each with a stimulating mix of lecture and practical exercises.
Who can attend?
A
person may attend the Citizens Police Academy if he or she lives or works in
Norfolk, is 18 years of age or older, completes an application and returns it to
the Second Patrol Division, and that application is accepted.
How do I enroll?
Application forms may be obtained by calling Officer J. M. Williams at 664-6900.

e-mail address for Officer Williams is judith.williams@norfolk.gov. Be sure to
include your mailing address and/or telephone number. Complete, sign and return
the application to the Norfolk Police Department Citizens Police Academy, 2500
N. Military Highway Norfolk, VA 23502. A signed consent to a criminal background
check is required as part of the application process. The Norfolk Police
Department reserves the right to deny any application based upon criminal
history.
When? Where?
Classes are held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Second Patrol
Division. Each academy will last 12 weeks, and will be offered twice each year.
There will be some off-site classes as the schedule and demonstrations require,
or to visit other facilities.
