CPAAAN offers a hearty welcome to our website visitors! Get to know “About Us”, that is, about the city of Norfolk, Virginia, and about our growing civic organization in which all members are graduates of the NPD Citizens Police Academy.

Norfolk is a city full of history, having been founded in 1682. Many of its original inhabitants were watermen or merchants who depended on the nearby Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.  Located on the east coast of Virginia, Norfolk boasts a very busy seaport serving both civilian and military installations, as well as Norfolk International Airport, public and private universities, and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Approximately 241,000 people call our community home; many military families who have been stationed here choose to make this their permanent residence in retirement.  There are approximately 900 sworn and civilian employees of the Norfolk Police Department who protect our many diverse neighborhoods.

About Us

The Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association of Norfolk originated in 1999 when about a dozen graduates of the Citizens Police Academy met with Assistant Chief Sharon Chamberlin and Investigator Judy Hash to form a Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. The group felt that the knowledge that had been gained could in turn be used to make a positive contribution toward public safety in our communities. The membership has increased steadily over the years and today we have over 100 paid members. Anyone who has graduated from the Norfolk Police Department's Citizens Academy, is eligible for membership in the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.
